Book Review: The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice & Virtue – M. Lee

“The queer teen historical you didn’t know was missing from your life.” (Teen Vogue)

23151006

When I started this book it was not at all what I expected it to be.

I have to thank Majelle again for leaving me yet another shiner of a book when she left from the UK and couldn’t take all her books back to Canada with her. Best believe they came to a good home that enjoyed them.

To summarise;

Monty heads off on his Europe Tour after finishing school, his sister Felicity will go to a boarding school in France en route, and he shall return to help his father run his estate and other things accordingly as a Lord should. Crushing hard on his companion Percy, things are not quite as easy as the three of them think it is going to be on this trip that’s for sure.

With endless adventure, illness, excitement, love and horror I’d say this story had me too immersed for my own good. I have a lot to say about this book.

Firstly, how well written the characters were;

How they acted and spoke really made you feel close to the three of them, Monty, Percy and Felicity on their adventures. So much so that the sequel which follows Felicity, The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy’, is well and truly on my ‘to read list on Goodreads and my to buy’ list on Amazon.

I felt like Felicity was so badass but SO looked down upon for being a woman, naturally in those days. Every time she came through in the book my mind was screaming: YES GIRL GET IT’She had sass, smarts and her wits about her. She was a great character who I thoroughly enjoyed the most.

Monty to me was a bit like a wet flannel to start and I didn’t originally like him. Written phenomenally as he was supposed to come across as the rich boy who loved to drink and fuck his life away and moaned at everything; which he totally did BUT I ADORE HIS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!! It’s absolutely wonderful coming to the end of the story.

Although Percy is one of the main characters he was the one I felt least connected too. Shy and discriminated against, his character was naturally quite quiet and incredibly self aware, the best and driest sense of humour and some common sense too! He came out with a few crackers which got me liking him more and near the end of the book had me sobbing a plenty due to this growing like for him!

Secondly, wow, some particularly good stand out points for me;

This book was full of adventures and although slightly predictable still had me sat biting my nails as I read wanting to know what and where we going to go next! Being set in the Victorian era was a real reminder of the ways they used to travel around in those days. I’m mortified of boats so the fact these lost (but only slightly), excitable teens did all of their journeys via boat or horse and carriage would be the adventure and excitement in itself for me.

The era it was written also shows the take on relationships back then, how difficult it must have been for young men and women to be gay which also hinders them from being themselves at heart. It really shows the hardships and strains on family relationships but also highlights how far we’ve come since then in a really heartwarming way.

I love how a lot of the main storyline adventures are based around the 3 of them being cheeky and Monty taking something he shouldn’t have. God forbid how boring their Europe Tour would have been if not, I guess these things happened for a reason, right? DUH.

Finally it also made me realise and remember being taught about how difficult it was to treat illness back then! We are incredibly lucky. I really rate M. Lee’s absolute consistency in being able to make sure us as readers don’t forget wha era we are in, some authors really struggle to keep that maintained and I find in previous books based in these Victorian or ‘olden scale era’s’ I would tend to forget, but not this time!!! Really impressed and it wasn’t an annoying reminder either.

Thirdly, IS THIS HOW TRAVELLING EUROPE BECAME A THING? HAS IT BEEN A THING FOR THAT LONG?  ITS AWESOME.

I guess our version of A Europe tour is finishing university or school and Inter-railing Europe, travelling around Australia and New Zealand. Or America. Or Asia. The list goes on. But to have it known as a tour and be chaperoned, GOD FORBID MY PARENTS GOT SOMEONE TO CHAPERONE MY TRAVELS. I wouldn’t go (Sorry fam if you’re reading this).

Its still very much a thing to this day which is pretty cool to know that they even then when ‘on tour’ meant an old fashioned way of inter-railing. I doubt if I went it would be as action packed and wouldn’t take us 3 weeks to get from France to Venice by boat. And hopefully my parents wouldn’t send someone to breathe down the back of my neck.

All in all this book really impressed me with its adventures, the era it is based in and the romance, I highly recommend!

4/5

(Not quite up there as my standards are too high, but still pretty up there).

My London Bucket List – Lulu in London!

This entire post makes me sad because even though bopping back to London was really amazing, staying in my old workplace and seeing all of my old work colleagues was fab but saying farewell to Lulu was not.

BUT I was excited to tour around London with my faves!

So we checked into the Hilton London Wembley, said hello hello to all my old work colleagues (who I miss dearly if you’re reading this) and got ourselves settled up in the room before myself, Brad & Lulu hit London town!

Naturally the tube into central London takes about 20-40 minutes depending on Metropolitan or Jubilee line from Wembley.

But before heading to central we had to check out the new Boxpark in Wembley and show Lu the good stuff!!!

They have one in Shoreditch, the OG Boxpark, but decided that Wembley needed one as well and I fully back their decision. It is as cool as the one in Shoreditch and for sure will be incredibly popular and busy when the football season is on and the season games are at the stadium!

After this we headed straight for Central London, Southwark & London Bridge to be precise. I HAD to show Lu the Hays Galleria which will forever be my favourite. We walked along Bankside of the Thames and enjoyed the galleria, the views of the buildings along the Thames and of course obligatory pictures of London bridge and castle.

It was a really beautiful day just spent with a few of my favourites in my favourite place. I was just enjoying the time left with Lu more than anything. After our London adventures we headed back to Wembley and up to the executive lounge at the hotel for their two hour happy hour.

IMG_20190106_184637Free food and booze? rude not too to be honest. And it mean that Myself, Brad, Lu and Milda (Lu’s cousin) could enjoy some food and chills before hugging the shit out of Lulu and nearly suffocating her so she couldn’t get home to the US.

It was pretty sad moment, and I’m still sad about it, come back soon B (Don’t worry, I will definitely come to you otherwise one day).

The following day Brad and I decided to finally do something we had been meaning to do for a while in London, The Natural History Museum!

It was such a beautiful setting with the ice rink outside the museum! The best thing about museums are the free entry but don’t forget to donate if you can when you come in or before you leave to support the museums!

God I love London. The museum was a really great experience especially with the interactive section as well. Typically we have a habit of going with only 2 hours to spare before the museum shuts, we did the same at the Imperial War Museum so we are going to have to go back the place is so huge and we missed out quite a bit of the museum as well!

The new dinosaur section was awesome but my favourite part, OBVIOUSLY, Was the BLUE WHALE. The skeleton of a blue whale, full size, in all its glory and hanging from the ceiling of the museum. Its pretty damn awesome and Brad and I were in awe at the size of it.

It was a fun day out followed by a long drive back from Wembley to Lincoln, to end this post enjoy this adorable picture of Lu on the tube which makes me smile to no end,

I’ll see you real soon g

Norway – Icey Valleys, Lakes & Viking Stave Churches

The journey back to Oslo was a lot of fun… with some breaking and entering (we think?).

We left Aurland in excitement to get to the Oslo Christmas Market! But that was not forgetting out stops along the way! So we set of on our next 4 and a half hour journey!

MVIMG_20181125_105829

Our first stop on our journey was a beautiful snowy piece of road where the lake came beside the road and the mountains reflections in the water were almost perfect, this spot was called Eldrevatnet. And it was breathtaking. The next stop was in a similar area where we decided to take SLIDE on the ice! It was just a really nice way to break up the journey.

This second spot was also where we took our group pictures!

Our following stop was the windy road town of Gol, Norway! THIS was where we were wondering if we were breaking and entering! I found a stave church named Gol Stavkyrkje Gordarike on the maps, it was the first one to come out out of 3 in the area and naturally this one was the fake one. Either way it was good to see what is known as a viking stave church in Norway!

The stave church was in this area which had hotel rooms and a beautiful surroundings with the stave church in tow. There was no one there to stop us form walking in and the hotel rooms didn’t even really look like they were being used. We wondered if we had just come at a low part of the season because it was so quiet! Either way we walked right in and had a proper good snoop and film of the stave church they had don their grounds!

IMG_20181125_134918We stopped finally for some food in Fla. Not Flam, Fla. For a really really traditional Norwegian meal. McDonalds! It really wasn’t too much different to the UK. Macca’s is Macca’s at the end of the day. There was also this huge troll statue also which signifies their stories of legends that they tell to their children when young of trolls that roamed the land before us and among us quietly. This is a pretty big thing in Norway as it goes years back into Norwegian folklore!

And then we arrived in Oslo!

Next Stop? Oslo Christmas Market! (After the hotel of course).

Stay tuned! J

EXPERIENCE BUDAFEST 2018

Our trip to Budapest was a great one, but it had a motive and this was it.

Budafest 2018.

3 days of festival living minus the grossness of camping in one of the many beautiful cities in europe, Budapest! The festival takes places across Sunday, Monday and Tuesday in the week and is based across 3 clubs, Akvarium and Otkert and the Szechenyi Thermal Spa.

The line up was unreal with a fair few of my favourite DJ’s so we were all systems go!

Screen Shot 2019-03-13 at 17.09.51

These were just a few of the 2018 names!

BUDAFEST 2018 – Day 1, CamelPhat & More

On Day 1 we headed down to Akvarium to collect our wristbands, a quick pint and our nifty little map which showed us where all the venues were and also hand the line up on it and the set times! it was already pretty set in stone early on where we were going to spend the first night.

SO we headed BACK to Akvarium that night for Camelphat who we saw play Cola! We also saw Gotsome play as well, their sets were phenomenal and the light shows were pretty sick with it too. The frustrating thing we learnt was that getting served at the bar was SO HARD. Its almost like they don’t want to serve anyone in a moderate fashion. It took us an HOUR to get our first drinks. AN HOUR. So I ordered 8 so we didn’t haven’t to rush back for more and had 2 drinks each because I was NOT facing that again.

BUDAFEST 2018 – Day 2, Solardo & More

The following morning was a painful but still not to hungover type of morning. We decided that night we were going to bop along to Otkert the other ruin bar club to see some more DJ’s! This place we a little smaller than Akvarium but it was still awesome.

In Otkert we saw Sonny Fodera and Im glad it was others because it was a better venue than Akvarium. BUT STILL, we ended up at Akvarium not long after Sonny Fodera’s set started as Solardo were up next over there. After Solardo’s set we stuck around for the Techbox boys who one of our friends knew! So it was pretty awesome just chilling out outside with them pre their set. Which was also sick.

Id say we ended the night at 6am.

BUDAFEST – DAY 3, The Szechenyi Thermal Spa Party W/ Artwork & More

The party was the coolest party. With glittery wristbands and a virtual card around your neck so you didn’t have to take in any money, your girl was swimming pool ready with the full white swimming costume and cute shorts. Not that the shorts mattered anyway as I couldnt wear them in the spa.

Imagine being able to chill out and get boozy with the boys in a THERMAL POOL while Artwork plays his DJ set in front of you? Its awesome. I really enjoyed the spa party, time went so fast and so did the drinks. It was awesome fun but I didn’t take any pictures at all. I didn’t want to risk dropping it in a place like that and losing everything!

The best part was that it made me super tired when we left as it was like being in a hot tub swimming pool for about 3-4 hours straight so I slept like a baby right through into the following day. The grotty part was by the end of the night the pool was full of plastic cups and tinnies in the water, felt sorry for the clean up team.

Overall it was an experience I will never forget.

It was a great 3 days but it is safe to say I won’t do another metro festival like this one again. But I definitely recommend it to those who have never done one before. It was also a brilliant way to explore the city in the day and party in the night!

Unless my friends can sway me to go to Spring Break Amsterdam, then we may have to talk about doing another.

Festival tourism is always an interesting one and in this instance, it works really really well. It brings a lot of money into Budapest and everyone has a good time, its better to use what the locals have to offer us then to go with a traditional all inclusive. It helps the local communities to grow and I am all for support it brings!

Until next time, J x

The Norway Video

Hey all!

So as I did for Iceland I also created a video for my Norway trip!! I haven’t started the blog posts for Norway, but I will soon!

Dissertation and the fact it was my birthday recently have kept me on my toes.

But now you can experience the video and what we did in Norway before I write my posts on it!

Enjoy and I will be back to blogging properly soon!

NORWAY VIDEO!

If you have a youtube account feel free to subscribe as well!

Sri Lanka videos coming next!!

The Boss Babe Tag!

HELLO,

Ya girl is finally back and blogging after travelling to Sri Lanka with my university for an edu-vacational trip! There will be plenty to come in terms of blog posts and my experience as it was like no other experience I have ever had in my life. One thing I’m certain of is now I’m back I just want to be constantly travelling! Not long Jessie not long.

So I’m back and ready with the Boss Babe Tag!

Below are 13 questions picked and chosen by the wonderful Bri (LellowBC), us gal bloggers came together and put forward a load of questions for the tag and here we are!

You can find all the girls links below my questions!

What made you want to start a blog?

I really enjoyed writing when I was younger so its always been a huge passion of mine. I then started university to study tourism and that is where my SECOND travel passion started, so why not put the two things I love most together? And here we are!

What is your favourite post you’ve created?

I love writing all of them but its definitely got to be the one on the Budapest street art around the city, such beautiful pieces of artwork to reminisce and Ill also be getting a tattoo of a particular piece of artwork from there as well so I enjoy the anticipation of that!

Where in the world are you from?

I am from the East of the UK, Seaside towns and PROPER fish and chips. Don’t even question me about it.

What country is at the top of your bucket list?

Thailand and the Philippines are right at the top of my list due to the culture and FOOD! Bring me those blue seas please.

What is your fave way to relax at the end of the day?

My favourite way to wind down is with a good book and a cup of tea. I recently finished reading Cinder, a rewritten and revamped fantasy version of Cinderella. I HIGHLY would recommend!! Its an amazing book!

How did you come up with your blog name?

With a spelling mistake along the way! I wanted something travel-ish and ideally wanted Wanderer but it was taken for the URL, but I still try and utilise Wanderer on my blog just not with the URL! So I see myself as a wonderer about everything and traveller generally, so hopefully it fits!

Biggest goal as a blogger?

One day I’d love be endorsed and paid to travel for a company or whoever, I just want to travel and write my blog and make a living why is that SO HARD.

What is the one thing you hope people will get from visiting your site?

Where to go when visiting particular places! I know I haven’t been EVERYWHERE but i try my hardest to collate everywhere we went and when we went there, especially spending money and how expensive a place is as well! That way they feel well advised informally by me before going away anywhere!

What advice would you give beginner bloggers?

PROMOTE YOUR BLOG EVERYWHERE YOU WANT EVEN IF YOU’RE NERVOUS AS HELL. FUCK what other people think of it, its your passion, its your MUSE. EMBRACE THE BLOG and blog to do YOU. I have anxiety so when it came to promoting my blog publicly and those who have bullied me or put me down seeing my work? yeah terrifying you can forget it no thank you. GET THAT OUT OF YOUR MIND. You can do it, you can smash it, you can follow your dreams. And if a boss ass blog post is where its at? DO IT AND DO IT WITH GRACE AND KICK-ASS ATTITUDE.

What are some of your hobbies?

I love to go to the gym on the regulars, I also love to surf as well although down where I live there is not much surf knocking about so you definitely have to go elsewhere. Minus the obvious travelling and writing I also enjoy scrap booking, ALOT. I finally completed my scrap book I started in 2014!

Where is your #1 fave place to eat?

So judge me but I love me some frankie and benny’s. Cheap and cheerful all the way.

What is your fave part about being an influencer?

I don’t think I would ever class myself as an influencer, nor has anyone ever called me an influencer. So to reach that level of success through my blog would mean a lot.

Adams Peak, Sri Lanka. We hiked this at sunset, walked all night up step after step, got to the top, rang the bell, and sat down to watch the sunrise, from what felt like the top of the world. Amazing experience!
This is just how high we hiked!

What is the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?

Probably what I did about 2 weeks ago and climbed Adam’s Peak in Sri Lanka, a Buddhist pilgrimage route! We started walking up the mountain at about 2:15am and made it 100 meters from the top by 5:30 in the morning to watch the sun rise over the mountains of Sri Lanka. It was absolutely phenomenal and I will never forget it. Neither will my legs as I couldn’t physically stop on the way down.

Here are the other beautiful ladies who helped put these questions together; get over to their sites and gives these wonderful girls some love!
