Cinder – Marissa Meyers
WHAT A BOOK.
This book made me angry, happy, excited, anticipating what was going to happen next it was so gripping. I read this book whilst I was in Sri Lanka on a trip with university. You can imagine my happiness in discovering this book was only the first of 5 in The Lunar Chronicles because man was I gutted when I finished it.
This book, and series, seems to really bring a mix of modernisation and futuristic fantasy with your traditional Disney princesses.
It brings a badass woman who’s majority cyborg and a mechanic because of it, living with her stepmother and sisters. The relationships are very much the same as that of Cinderella but the relationship with the prince is much more unique. The ball is still very much a prominent factor but the storyline itself is just so fluid and easy to read, hence why I couldn’t put it down. There are so many twists and turns, unexpected fates, all pieced together perfectly.
The setting of the book is something that really surprised me as it is set in what appears to be a futuristic New Beijing. Flying cars, all new technology and just generally a very technological era the story is set in. It’s interesting to see how Meyers still incorporates the princess aspects of the story into a COMPLETELY different era, location and time so incredibly well.
It is nice to also have a storyline where the love story is present but isn’t the main and only focus throughout with lots of other stories to focus on giving you a full and rounded perspective.
The fact Cinder is a cyborg makes her an outcast and why would anyone want a cyborg at the ball? The prince. But it’s never all as it seems and that’s what makes it SO exciting as it is all very fast paced. I feel thats why I enjoyed it so much. You’re left yearning to know what happens next almost immediately.
The way each characters are written is cleverly done. I am left despising and loving characters all at the same time. It had been a really long time since a book sucked me in like this one so naturally I purchased the next book, Scarlett, almost as soon as I got back to the UK.
Cinder is the type of girl who if she wants the prince she will get him. Not run away and lose her glass slipper, well, not quite.
Well and truly recommend with a solid 5/5 from me!
